This cozy galley kitchen in the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento had good bones and a warm, earthy vibe thanks to its terra cotta-colored walls, a color the clients already adored and wanted to preserve. The 1920s home had plenty of character, and we focused on honoring that history while giving the kitchen a much-needed upgrade in function and storage.
To start, we installed new custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of this small space. We designed every cabinet, drawer, and pull-out to be as practical as it is beautiful. For the backsplash, we chose handmade zellige tiles, which catch the light in a beautiful way that feels both timeless and artful. Each tile varies slightly from the rest, which lends an authentic, handcrafted feel. The quartz countertops provide a durable, low-maintenance surface with a smooth, modern look that contrasts softly with the rustic elements. And for hardware, we selected matte black pulls and knobs, adding a modern edge that balances perfectly with the warm wall color and tiles.
The flooring was a unique challenge. Since traditional tile felt too cold and hard for the clients’ liking, we opted for a Marmoleum product instead. As a sustainable material, Marmoleum offers durability and warmth, making it a comfortable choice that’s in tune with the home’s inviting atmosphere. Additionally, the checkerboard pattern fits right in with the updated 1920s aesthetic!
Finally, in the butler’s pantry area, we added a small touch of whimsy. We designed a custom drawer featuring a charming flower cut-out, allowing for ventilation for onions and garlic. And it turned out to be one of our (and our clients’) favorite details in the entire space! In addition, we reused an existing piece of butcher block for the pantry countertop – a sustainable and practical choice. This remodel strikes a perfect balance between the home’s vintage 1920s roots and the clients’ need for functional, modern design. The result is a kitchen that feels warm, welcoming, and entirely true to the home’s original charm.
